Aguas Calientes: Machu Picchu Village
The jumping off point for Machu Picchu has more to offer than you may first think. Here are my top recommendations of things to do, if you find yourself with some spare time in Aguas Calientes.
1. Visit the Thermal Baths
Did you know Aguas Calientes translates to hot water? What better way to relax after a long day hiking than in Aguas Calientes’ hot spring pools.
Note. the water is slightly murky and has a unique smell due to the natural minerals it contains.
2. Hike up to Cascadas Allcamayo Waterfall
Just 25 minutes from Aguas Calientes, with a path full of vegetation, and bordering the river, wonderful waterfalls appear, so you can enjoy nature in all its splendour. The route is not demanding, so anyone can do it, taking short (or long) breaks.
3. Get your passport stamped
Just outside the iPeru office you will find a stand to get the Machu Picchu stamp, for free. Putting an unofficial stamp in your passport can invalidate your passport so I recommend taking a notebook or scrap piece of paper to stamp instead.
4. Visit the butterflies at Mariposario de Machu Picchu
Home to thousands of butterfly species, this beautiful place is located a five minute walk from Aguas Calientes. Not only will you get the opportunity to admire the butterflies, you can also see all the all the stages of a butterfly from a microscopic level.
5. Go shopping in the Artisanal Market
Located just outside the train station, it is hard to miss this market. With lots of souvenirs and clothing, it is worth exploring what this market has to offer.
